Trauma And Resistance:

The Legacy of the Warsaw Ghetto

In the history of Jewish resistance, few episodes stand as stark and powerful as the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943.  When we think of those fighters, young men and women, we picture their courage, their defiance, their decision to die fighting rather than be led to the gas chambers.   But what we rarely discuss is what happened to those who lived past the uprising and carried its weight with them.  What happens to the mind when it is subjected to such extreme brutality, when survival itself becomes an act of defiance?  And how do we, as Jews, and as inheritors of this history, understand their trauma within the framework of PTSD today?
